Why not use your imagination to create a friend for Boc, the friendly little dragon?
Welsh language comic for children, Mellten is calling on children from across Wales to grab a pencil and colouring pens and create their own masterpiece of a cartoon character that could be friends with Boc the dragon.
In the lead up to World Book Day 2019 (7 March), the Welsh Books Council has launched an exciting competition which is part of a campaign to encourage schools, bookshops, colleges, libraries, businesses and homes nationwide to join in the pleasure of reading a book and sharing a story.
The quarterly comic is a mix of stories, jokes, puzzles and competitions and the comic’s illustrator, Huw Aaron, is renowned for his doodles of weird and wonderful creatures in his books. The competition is open to children of all ages and closes on 12 April.
Huw Aaron, editor of Mellten comic and creator of Ble Mae Boc? (Find the Dragon) said: “I love making up stories and fun characters and showing children that you can actually do it for a living; an important message which will hopefully inspire children to continue drawing and writing. I love seeing children get excited from reading a book – no film, video or app yet invented can replicate the warm joy of escaping into a good book. I’ve been creating narratives and bringing characters to life since before I can remember.”
Aimed at children aged between 7 and 13 years old, Mellten is the first original Welsh comic to be published in decades and includes contributions from a variety of artists, cartoonists and authors.
Angharad Wyn Sinclair, Welsh Books Council’s Reading Promotions Project Manager said: “Following the great response to this competition last year, we are delighted to be working again with Mellten and Lolfa to encourage the children and young people of Wales to fire up their imagination and create a friend to Boc, the little dragon. We look forward to seeing the variety of colourful characters!”
The prize for the winning cartoon character will be a £40 book token, an original piece of artwork by Huw Aaron and their illustration featured in an issue of the comic. Runners up will be given a £15 book token and the first 30 schools to send in their entries will win a year’s subscription to Mellten.
